BOARD ALLOCATES FINAL YEAR OF FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDING

$90 Million Distributed Among State’s 32 Public Colleges & Universities over 3 Years

(TOPEKA) – Today the Kansas Board of Regents distributed $40 million in Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds among the state’s 32 public colleges and universities. This represents the final distribution of a three-year program which has provided nearly $90 million in federal stimulus funds to the state’s public universities, community colleges, and technical colleges. Colleges and universities were required to use the funds for deferred building maintenance projects and/or tuition cost mitigation.

“This vitally important federal funding has served as a life-preserver for our state’s higher education system as we’ve been forced to absorb a 13% budget cut,” said Regent Jill Docking, of Wichita, Chair of the Kansas Board of Regents. “These funds have been used to address critical campus maintenance needs, in turn stimulating local economies and improving student learning environments. In addition, institutions have used these funds to mitigate the tuition burden on students during this challenging economic environment.”

About the Kansas Board of Regents:

The nine-member Kansas Board of Regents is the governing board of the state’s six universities and the statewide coordinating board for the state’s 32 public higher education institutions (seven public universities, nineteen community colleges, and six technical colleges).
