BOARD OF REGENTS ANNOUNCES ENGLISH LITERACY AND CIVICS EDUCATION GRANT FUNDING

Nine Adult Education Programs Receive a Total of $328,000

(TOPEKA) – The Kansas Board of Regents today awarded $328,000 in federal English Literacy and Civics Education (ELCE) grants to nine Kansas Adult Education programs. These grants, which are competitive, will provide integrated English literacy and civics education services to immigrants and limited English-proficient populations. The grant recipients and award amounts are as follows:

Barton County Community College $17,000
Flint Hills Technical College, Emporia $41,000
Garden City Community College $38,000
Johnson County Community College $59,000
Pittsburg USD 250 $7,000
Salina USD 305 $27,000
Seward County Community College $70,000
Wichita Area Technical College $49,000
Wichita Indochinese Center $20,000

These grants will allow adult education programs to expand the focus of English-as-a second-language classes to include an emphasis on civics education and preparation for United States citizenship," said Dianne Glass, Director of Adult Education for the Kansas Board of Regents. "Adult learners will benefit from expanded services including classes emphasizing the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, naturalization procedures, civic participation, and United States history and government, thus becoming better-informed parents, employees and community members."

The United States Department of Education allocates ELCE funding to the Kansas Board of Regents under Title II of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. The Kansas Board of Regents’ Adult Education Division assists Kansans in extending their learning throughout life. Adult education programs serve adults, age 16 and over, who are in need of basic skills to assist them in the workforce, community participation and family life.
