Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is responsible for calculating the student's curriculum GPA?

The Regents university to which the student applies is responsible for calculating the student's GPA for admission purposes. The high school should provide to the Regents universities to which the student seeks admission, (1) a copy of the student's high school transcript showing all work completed; and (2) a completed Kansas Board of Regents Prescribed Pre-college Curriculum Form.

2. What is the procedure for calculating the GPA for the qualified admissions curriculum?

The cumulative average will be computed by the Regents universities from the grades earned in the courses used to meet the required distribution of high school courses. Students who possess one or more courses with "D" grades, but whose cumulative average in such courses in the pre-college curriculum is a 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale will be considered as having met this admission criterion.

3. Is the grade point average based on only 14 units or on all courses the student has taken that have been approved as part of the Regents pre-college curriculum?

The Regents universities will calculate the applicant's average GPA from the highest grades within the required distribution of courses in the pre-college curriculum. For example, if a student has taken 5 units of English that qualify, the 4 highest grades will be used on the computation. However, the student's grades in Algebra II must be used in the computation since it is a required course in the pre-college curriculum. The required distribution of courses with the minimum cumulative average GPA of 2.00 or higher at the end of either the 6th, 7th or 8th semester of high school may be used to meet this criterion, but in all cases, the student's final average GPA must be 2.00 or higher.

4. How will percentages and other methods of grading be translated into a 4.00 scale?

High schools may use a wide variety of weighted grade point averages for various purposes. Regardless of the local grading system used by a high school, each high school will be asked to provide the letter grades requested for Regents universities admission purposes only. Therefore, the grades reported for the completion of the pre-college curriculum is solely for use in determining a student's eligibility for admission to a Kansas Regent university.

5. How and when should the GPA for students in the top third of the class be calculated?

A student's highest rank in class as reported by the high school at the end of either the 7th or 8th semester will be used. In all cases, the student's final highest rank in class must place the student within the top third of the class. See item 7 below.

6. If a high school does not rank students, will its students have to meet one of the other criteria?

Yes.

7. Is class rank to be computed based on total curriculum or the pre-college curriculum?

The top 1/3 of the applicant's high school class is a separate admissions criterion. Therefore, a student's 7th or 8th semester class rank should be reported by the high school based on the student's total curriculum. High Schools should report the total number of students in the applicant's class and the applicant's numerical rank in the class.

The same procedures will be followed when determining eligibility of students who have graduated from out-of-state high schools. Students who have graduated from out-of-state high schools will be required to submit either 7th or 8th semester high school transcripts and corresponding rank in class information. Each Regents University admissions office will evaluate the nature and level of the high school courses appearing on the official transcript from an out-of-state high school accredited by a regional accrediting association on the basis of available information.

In all cases, the student's final highest rank in class must place the student within the top third of the class.
