Information on the alignment requirements for the Machining & Manufacturing Technology Program
CIP Code: 48.0501
CIP Name: Machine Tool Technology/Machinist
Definition: A program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to plan, manufacture, assemble, test, and repair parts, mechanisms, machines, and structures in which materials are cast, formed, shaped, molded, heat treated, cut, twisted, pressed, fused, stamped or worked.
The Machining & Manufacturing Technology Alignment was originally approved by the Kansas Board of Regents on December 20, 2010. After going through the realignment process, the Technical Education Authority approved the amended Machining & Manufacturing Technology alignment on December 16, 2022. Colleges are granted one academic year from the approval date to implement the alignment. Implementation of amended alignment must be completed by Fall 2024.
STATE BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY & STATE FACULTY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION
The Business and Industry Committee and State Faculty Committee were combined during the Fall 2022 realignment process. The combined committee recommended renaming the Machine Technology program to Machining & Manufacturing Technology to give students a better idea of what the program is about. The Business and Industry Committee recommended removing the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certifications due to the lack for interest from business/industry and lack of requirements from job postings.
