2023 Apply Free Days Annual Report
To make sure your college application is in tiptop shape and ready to submit on time, it's a good idea to start your application before October 7. Even if you finish the application early, you can wait until Monday, October 7th to submit and finalize your application. Remember- only applications submitted during this three-day time frame, Monday, October 7 - Wednesday, October 9, will be free. There will be no refunds given for applications submitted outside of this three-day window, even for technological errors. Please contact the admission office of the individual institution you are applying to if you have problems with application submission.
Using the Common Application at KU, KSU or WSU? Contact the admission department at these institutions to find out how to waive the application fee when submitting your common application during October 7-9.
All residents of Kansas who are applying for undergraduate programs at all state public and private* Kansas colleges and universities are eligible to submit their admission applications for free on October 7-9, 2024. Undergraduate programs include undergraduate level certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor degrees. This means all of the following applicants are eligible:
First-time freshmen
Transfer students
Returning students
Applicants seeking a second bachelor's degree
Applications for graduate-level programs are not eligible.
*Private Institutions outside of the Kansas Independent College Association may not be participating in the Kansas Apply Free Days. Please check with the individual institution's admission department if it is not listed here.
Not all of the Kansas colleges and universities have application fees. Applying to our 19 community colleges is free every day, all year around. In addition, Pittsburg State University, Washburn University, and Emporia State University removed their application fees, so students can apply there for free every day. Many of our Private Colleges and Universities do not have application fees. Visit their websites for more information!
After you apply, it's important to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is your ticket to grants, scholarships, and work-study positions that can help reduce the costs of college. Learn more about the FAFSA!
After the FAFSA, consider your options for state aid through the Kansas State Scholarship Program. Learn more here.
To encourage more Kansans to continue their education, all 32 public colleges and universities in Kansas and most of the private institutions allow students to apply for free on Monday, October 7 - Wednesday, October 9 in a statewide effort to break down barriers to higher education.
Kansas Apply Free Days is during Apply Kansas month, a state wide application campaign held annually in October that helps support 12th grade students in the completion of applications based on their post-secondary plans.
The Kansas Apply Free Days program is designed to increase Kansas's college-going and FAFSA completion rates. In the last 10 years we have seen our college-going rate decline. As of 2021, we are only sending 59.5% of our high school graduates to a college, university or certificate program, and less than 50% of students submit a FAFSA application-a key indicator of students' likelihood to continue their education.
By removing barriers for students to achieve a credential, Kansas can help residents take that first step into continuing their education to increase the number of students who complete their programs and enter the workforce with a degree or competitive skills. Kansas Apply Free Days encourages residents to realize their fullest potential.

1. BACKGROUND OF KANSAS MATH PATHWAYS
Traditional postsecondary mathematics, including requiring college algebra for most majors, and requiring traditional prerequisite remediation that does not count toward a baccalaureate degree, impose unnecessary obstacles to degree completion for Kansas students.
According to KBOR’s Developmental Education Data Report, too few students are completing a traditional prerequisite developmental course and a general education math course within a two-year period. Further, according to a 2015 Report published by the Mathematical Association of America, A Common Vision for Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences Programs in 2025, “mathematics courses are the most significant barrier to degree completion in both STEM and non-STEM fields.”
The Kansas Board of Regents seeks to implement proven practices that remove these obstacles and advance access, affordability, success, and completion (all components of the Board’s strategic plan, Building a Future), by working with the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin on Mathematics Pathways.
Kansas is now one of the 22 states participating in the Launch Years Initiative, which supports the scaling of mathematics pathways from high school through postsecondary education and into the workplace, aligned to students’ goals and aspirations. The Dana Center provides resources and support and holds an annual convening at which participating states can share ideas, best practices, and experiences related to the initiative.

The Kansas MOA Plan outlines procedures for civil rights compliance activities to be conducted by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) for secondary institutions and the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) for postsecondary institutions delivering Career Technical Education (CTE).
The plan describes the process that KSDE and KBOR staff will follow to incorporate multiple data sources to identify disproportionate enrollment and other areas of potential discrimination and select subrecipients for onsite compliance reviews. The plan also describes how KSDE and KBOR will identify technical assistance needs related to civil rights compliance and provide training and technical assistance to subrecipients.
This plan is submitted pursuant to the program memorandum issued February 6, 2020 by the Office for Civil Rights and the Office for Career Technical and Adult Education.
Civil Rights Monitoring Information
Staff from KSDE and KBOR conduct desk audits and on-site monitoring visits to institutions delivering approved CTE pathways and programs to monitor compliance with Federal civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination in programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. Desk audits will occur annually according to this chart and the Kansas MOA Plan.
KBOR Civil Rights Compliance On-Site Coordinator’s Manual is available to assist postsecondary institutions in reviewing their current policies and practices and in preparing for an on-site monitoring visit. More detailed information regarding specific laws applicable may be found at the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights website. About OCR (ed.gov)
